    Increase the size of an existing landmark church by 100% with an addition that maintains the character of the original, and renovate the existing church for 21st-century ministry.

    Our Focus:

    An addition that complements the historic structure inside and out. In the existing building, landmark interior spaces were restored, hallways widened, and the building was made completely accessible.

    Our Focus:

    Establish the parish hall as a formal complement to the existing church. Connect the addition to the church with as few points as possible, and create an interior courtyard as a result. Use residential construction techniques for their economy.

    A new chapel and multipurpose assembly and recreation space for the church community and parochial school.

    Our Focus:

    The siting of the building reinforces pedestrian movement across the campus, creates a campus lawn that brings significance to the existing rectory, and complements the placement of the existing church steeple. Concrete block on the exterior relates to the walls of the historic church rectory.

    Remove intrusions constructed over the years and return the modest, yet noble, little church to a place of dignity and reverence. New materials interpret the character of the original church and enhance the environment for worship.

    Remove finishes and accessories from previous renovations to create a comfortable gathering space with modern fixtures and furniture.

    Their Vision:

    A 1,300 seat church that accommodates a small worshiping community and a significant number of seasonal visitors.

    Our Focus:

    Traditional church imagery and forms serve as the foundation on a steeply sloping site. New expressions of worship require a more intimate relationship between worshipers and the celebrant, so the basilica plan is widened to bring parishioners closer to the altar. A cruciform skylight over the center of the worship space and large windows defined by gothic arches and colored glass admit ample amounts of daylight into the worship space.

    Engage the congregation throughout the design process, and design the new space to suit their needs.

    A new parish hall for social activities, and new parish offices, which had been housed in the existing rectory.

    Our Focus:

    Use the the new program to connect an existing recreation/education building to the church, so the gathering space for the parish hall could also support the church. Furthermore, developing an addition that was clearly related to the existing church without simply building more of the same.

    Connect two freestanding buildings and provide additional lobby space.

    Our Focus:

    Ample daylight, straightforward movement and strategically-placed information kiosks in a spacious lobby extend the church's welcome to visitors, and provides much-needed queue space for worship services. A new drop-off canopy welcoming visitors arriving by car, and new accessible restrooms in the lobby addition were provided.

    Their Vision:

    A new 1,200 seat worship space with new, adjacent support spaces.

    Our Focus:

    Address difficult movement patterns with a new entrance to a new, two-story, daylit lobby aligning with an existing main corridor. The trend toward "black box" auditoriums for worship was resisted; instead, ample amounts of daylight pour into the worship space. Simple forms and materials kept construction costs low while making a bold statement toward an adjacent freeway.

    Their Vision:

    A new fellowship hall, gymnasium, family life center, library, nurseries and classrooms for an existing church, and improved movement through the building, especially for visitors.

    Our Focus:

    A new "by-pass" corridor between the existing building and the addition, with a cross-corridor connecting existing spaces to new recreation areas. A new entry rotunda is a focal point and provides gathering space between worship services.
